 Traditional approaches
Communicative approaches
Focus in learning:

In our school, we used to work with grammar only, everything we did was by schedules, we used to work only with our two books, and we did a lot of exams of irregular verbs and vocabulary.
Focus is on communication:

In our opinion the main thing in this subject is the communication.

We would like to be more prepared for speaking with others instead of knowing all these grammar that nowadays doesn’t mean anything to us.
How language items are selected:

We used to learn grammar depending of the structures and the normal order.
The first thing was the present and we keep learning all the structures till the last one that was in the book.
We think that is a good way of learning because if we start teaching them with communication instead of books, we mean conversations and dialogues and things like that, children by themselves will ask for what they want to learn. Like the structures. If we are telling them a story they will ask us what they want to know.
How language items are sequenced:

The subjects no were connected. For example we used to learn vocabulary about travelling in English, but in Conocimiento del Medio class we used to learn animals and stuff relative to it.
We think that the best way is connect all the subjects, because if they are learning things related with animals for example, in the English class they will get through it again and they will learn all the stuff in the L2 too.
View of language:

The only way we used to learn a Language at High school, it was by learning Literature, Grammar and how to write in a correct way.
We think that a Language has more than one use, and it’s the main thing of communication.
Type of language used:

The language we learnt was related to the vocabulary of our books. We didn’t know how to have a conversation with someone. (like day by day vocabulary)
We think that teaching everyday language and vocabulary is better than learning formal and grammar structures.
For us, that’s more practical.
What is regarded as a criterion of success:

We used to do activities like fill in the gaps all the time.
We think that type of exercises is useless because they are a waste of time really.
Children get bored immediately.
It’s better to do communication activities.
What language skills are emphasized:

We used to read a lot of texts and articles, and we used to do a lot of compositions too, but we never practiced oral communication. (like a conversation)
We think that this methodology is
better because we teach children how
to listen and understand other people
speaking in English, and in the end, we
teach them how to write.
Teacher/students roles:

Teachers always think that he is the main role in the class.
Pupils didn’t act in class and what the teacher said was what we used to do.
There wasn’t feedback.
Children do what they think is more
Important in class and they have the
chance to learn a lot of things by
themselves.
Attitude to errors:

We used to speak Based on our book grammar.

That’s a reason why people don’t want to speak now, because they are afraid of say something wrong

Speaking without correct people, and just understand them, even though the sentences are not correct at all.
